Jeffrey Ashton is a National Master (NM) recognized by the United States Chess Federation (USCF), a professional chess coach, and the founder of the kids-only Panda Chess Academy in Houston. He was also a pioneer in collegiate chess on a full-ride scholarship at UT Dallas.
He learned chess in the 4th grade in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and became serious about the game in the 7th grade, leading to active tournament play.
He achieved the prestigious National Master (NM) title during his junior year of high school after competing in his 70th tournament, reaching a peak rating of 2285 in July 1998. He represented Michigan in the prestigious Denker Tournament of High School Champions that same year. Less than one percent of rated US Chess players hold the NM title.
Jeffrey Ashton received one of the first ten full-ride chess scholarships at the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas), a trailblazing program at the time. He served as the UTD Chess Team President during his freshman year, winning his first ten consecutive games for the university and earning the nickname "Iron Man." He helped UTD win the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Championship and led the team to victory in the inaugural Final Four of College Chess with a perfect score against higher-rated opponents.
After graduating from UTD with a degree in Psychology, Jeffrey moved to Houston in 2003. He was recruited through a coordinated effort by three schools: T.H. Rogers, West University Elementary School, and Annunciation Orthodox Academy. He later expanded his coaching to include The Village School, the Katy Scholastic Chess Club, the Mandarin Immersion Magnet School, and the Sri Meenakshi Temple.
Jeffrey identified a gap in the local chess scene, which primarily catered to adults in environments that were not ideal for children. Conforming to his values of safety, sportsmanship, and focus, he opened Panda Chess Academy (PCA) in 2008 as a full-time, brick-and-mortar chess club dedicated exclusively to young players (K-12 and younger) in Houston (located at 9900 Westpark #252). Over nearly two decades, the academy has hosted over 800 USCF-rated tournaments.
In 2020, the United States Chess Federation acknowledged his significant and sustained positive impact on the American chess community by honoring him with the US Chess Meritorious Service Award. He is also a vocal advocate for safety in chess and is featured on the official US Chess Mission & Vision page as an ambassador to U.S. SafeSport.
